2n1 - a great Humbucker + Fender / P-90 sonic dimensions

2n1 (2 different sounds from 1 pickup)

The sounds of these 3 guitars from one amazing pickup ...

... by pressing this special Push/Push splitting switch

Previous models of Kinman humbuckers are reknown for their much improved split single coil sound but we felt we could do even better.  The new 2n1 v2 version of our multi-sound humbucker produces highly dynamic bouncy Humbucker sound (with unusually good definition and lively response from the low E-6th string) + dramatically improved split single coil sound (beyond Fender & P-90-ish, very loud and highly stimulating ... but non-noiseless, although less hum than a Strat pickup)

We know other pickups have promised Single coil sound from passive split humbuckers before, but you've always been disappointed, right!  Our Multi-Sonic Humbucker makes the same promises, and delivers them and more.

UPDATE:  The 2n1 has been discontinued in favor of our Converge-3 Multi-Sonic humbucker which is available in non-noiseless and Zero-Hum versions.  Click the link for information and to place your order.

Included is our special Push pot that replaces an existing Tone control.  This switched pot is a Tone control that incorporates the splitting switch.   This very unusual humbucker works almost equally well with a 500k or 250k volume pot in both modes, but the 500k produces noticeable more juice.

The humbucker sound has excellent clarity, definition and an incredibly dynamic fat punchy sound.  The kind of punchy dynamic response that moves a lot of air in front of the speaker.   The plain strings are plenty bright enough but there is no ice-pick, just sweet n sharp highs that have bite.  The 2n1 strikes an uncommon balance between the low wound strings and the plain ones ... and that's the welcome opposite of the common complaint about ordinary humbuckers.  But all of that changes with an additional feature of the splitting control which is a small, screwdriver-adjustable preset trim pot that acts as a jangle control.  When set to two coil humbucker mode it decreases the brightness and to an extent the definition of the low wound strings and fattens the plains (has no effect on the split single sound).  With jangle at maximum it sounds pretty much like our 59 LPS humbucker.  We think a more suitable name is 3n1 because of this unique control.

Another highly unusual quality is the low wound strings played together as a chord on the neck pickup at clean high volume are tight and well behaved and are never sloppy, messy sounding as ordinary humbuckers tend to be.

The split sound is best described as more Fender than Fender and produces an extremely vibrant single coil sound, thanks to our Patented magnetic invention in the primary coil.  The split sound is not noiseless (although our more expensive Converge-3 version coming along later in 2021 is Zero-Hum in both modes).  Both of these pickups are loud and strong , sharp and snappy and have an extreme Fender vibe.  We go as far as claiming that it's the best split single coil sound available from any splittable humbucker.  Set to single coil mode a pair of 2n1's on together produces a dramatic Knopfler-esque sound more intense than a Strat in position 4.  Comparing it side-by-side to a Strat pickup the Fender sounds ordinary and un-inspiring (that's why we say it's more Fender than Fender).  When he split the coils one customer exclaimed "this split sound has reminded me of the reason I fell in love with Strats in the first place way back when, but this is far better"

In fat humbucker mode the sound crunches easily on the wound and the plain strings cook and sizzle with a unique fuzzy purr that retains it's sharp bite.  In split mode it resists crunching in the similar manner of a Fender single coil pickup.  Although this humbucker's coils are radically asymmetric Zero-Hum is produced in humbucker mode, thanks to Kinman's highly competent patented hum balancing technology.

Middle position (both-on-together) in humbucker mode produces a very distinctive c-luck sound, more intense than any ordinary humbucker.  Customers have told us it's a sound to die for, and we agree.

The 2n1 is fantastic for any type of music played with humbuckers (rock, heavy rock, indie, pop, country and even heavy metal) and co-incidentally it's very nice for Jazz.  It's extremely versatile sonic quality all the way, not one of the 6 (combination and stand-alone) sounds is anything but superb which makes us believe the 2n1 the MOST versatile pickup known to man.  Experiencing is believing and we promise you won't be disappointed in the least, why not order today!

Available in 2 versions ....

  1.  2n1 Lite   for neck (or bridge)
  2.  2n1   for Bridge (or neck)

Replaces humbuckers in all guitars but it's not suitable for modern Gibson Les Pauls that have controls mounted on a circuit board unless you ditch the Gibson harness and replace it with a Kinman KHP-90 Goodbye Soldering Harness.  Also not suitable for Gibson SG, ES-335 or other thin body guitars because the splitting switch requires a minimum 28mm control cavity depth.

Technical & Application info:

Laser engraved identity info so you'll always know.

Direct replacement for conventional humbuckers such as Gibson, Duncan etc.  Some guitars (a few Ibanez, some Fender Strat and one or two others) have pickups with excessively rounded corners.  If a pickguard is fitted (for example Fender Strat Deluxe) a small modification to the pickguard opening to accommodate a Kinman humbucker is well worth the effort since Kinman's sound so much better.  The cavity in the body is suitable as it is.

Hook-up cable

  • Comes with it's own Push pot which outputs with 2 conductor cable to the guitar's wiring.  380mm / 15" long.

Connection means available

  • It's own Push pot outputs to the harness with either of the following ....
    • Shielded hook-up cable for soldering
    • Kinman connectors for plugging into any Kinman Goodbye-Soldering Harness.- including the 1 or 2 pickup KHP-90 for Gibson style guitars.

Pot & Capacitor values

  • Best with 250k Ohm Volume & Tone for both full and split single coil modes.  Many Gibson's have 300k which is satisfactory.
  • Tone pot can be 250k, 500k or 1 Meg Ohm.
  • Normal tone cap value of 0.022µF in 63 ~ 100 volt Polyester.  Smaller value lessen the severity of Treble cut, higher values increase it.

Output Polarity:

  • in-phase with Gibson and Copy humbuckers
  • in-phase with all other Kinman pickups
  • opposite phase to Fender Strat
  • Phase Reversing control available (Push/Push)

Pole spreads

  • 47.5mm for the neck position of all guitars that have bridge saddle spread less then 54mm.
  • 50mm for all applications except the bridge position of a Strat with vintage 6 point bridge and saddle spread of 56.4mm as well as bridge position in other guitars with a bridge saddle spread less than 54mm.
  • 53mm for bridge position in Strats with a genuine vintage 6 point bridge that have saddle spread of 56.4mm.

Mounting options

  • conventional 2 screws mounting, standard American thread, Philips X drive.
  • also available with highly recommended 3 screw mounting (you specify the distance between the two top screws).
  • mounting screws and silicon rubber tube springs included.

Covers and colors

  • Closed or Open top buffed natural Nickel-Silver, and Gold plated covers.
  • Durable Black with nickel or black pole pieces
  • Kinman humbuckers are engineered differently without the molded plastic bobbins that all other humbuckers have.  Removing covers will not reveal bobbins and we advise against it.
